The Assistant Director will support the Health and Public Safety team’s work within the institute including systems engagement with mental health emergency response, law enforcement, police and other first responder health and wellness, and other applicable areas. The Assistant Director will work collaboratively with institute colleagues, funders, contractors, partner agencies, and stakeholders, including law enforcement, police and other first responder and mental health agencies, and will support program development, planning, and documentation. The Assistant Director will help develop program materials and resources for various audiences and may produce reports, briefings, and meet with stakeholders, partner agencies, and contractors.

The Assistant Director’s primary responsibilities are to manage and/or participate in health and public safety project work and submission of project deliverables on timelines required, with an emphasis on community health and public safety systems. Statewide travel (up to 15%) may be required. Some duties may require access to reliable personal transportation.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and coordinate health and public safety activities across various projects.
  • Support and, when appropriate, lead health and public safety projects throughout Texas providing technical assistance and project implementation;
  • Offer health and public safety expertise to the broader Meadows Institute’s Teams in the Assistant Director’s areas of expertise;
  • Contribute leadership to projects as needed, managing the daily activities including report development, tracking deliverables, and deliverable submission for project related tasks;
  • Serve as a health and public safety project member producing assigned tasks and deliverables on the timeline set out by the project director;
  • Identify ways to overcome project challenges;
  • Lead or assist with grant proposals, including completing proposal applications, conducting relevant research, and tracking and reporting on submissions;
  • Provide consultation and technical assistance throughout assessment projects conducted by the Institute by conducting literature reviews, focus groups, and key informant interviews for projects;
  • Provide input to the project team that will help ensure programs are carefully designed to deliver meaningful, quantifiable impact in accordance with the Meadows Institute’s goals;
  • Ensure that projects run smoothly and that deliverables are of the highest quality and are provided in a timely manner;
  • Assist with convening and collaborating activities that further the Meadows Institute’s best practice innovation activities;
  • Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:

Required Qualifications

  • Five years combined experience in public safety practices, programs, operations, and policy;
  • Five years of experience in law enforcement, police and other first responder training, health and wellness program development, or mental health emergency response programs;
  • Able to work independently and remotely, and to overcome geographic and other potential barriers to communicating with and making contributions to the team’s work;
  • Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Strong leadership skills, including the ability to foster cultural humility, empathy, and open communication;
  • Attuned to the risks of vicarious trauma and mental health needs of oneself and others;
  • Strong familiarity with Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Power Point.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience conducting focus groups and analyzing quantitative data;
  • Experience writing implementation, program, and other assessment and client-based reports;
  • Experience implementing law enforcement, police and other first responder-based programs;
  • Active military experience.

Eligibility Requirements:

The preferred work location for this position is in Texas. This position may not be filled or performed in California, Colorado, Hawaii, Montana, Rhode Island, or Washington at this time. Relocation assistance not available. Successful candidates must show proof of eligibility to work in the United States.
